Kingspan Timber Solutions Announced as Finalists of the Offsite Awards

Projects constructed from the high performance Kingspan TEK®, are proving a great success with the judges of two of this summer’s most prestigious construction industry awards. On the back of the news that Kingspan Timber Solutions has reached the finals of the Structural Timber Awards, the company announced this week that it has been shortlisted in two categories of the Offsite Awards.

Ian Loughnane Business Unit Director said: “The importance of developing energy efficient buildings is a central concern to providers of social housing and health care facilities. Through offsite technology, we are able to provide a marked decrease in the build time with a marked increase in the standard of build. It is so rewarding that our Kingspan TEK® SIP system is gaining such industry recognition.”

Kingspan Timber Solutions reached the finals of the following categories for:

•    Best Housing Project: 14 Castle Street Dover

•    Public Sector Project: Atherleigh Park Hospital

Best Housing Project

The development of eight affordable social housing apartments, set in a conservation area of the Dover, is an outstanding example of collaboration between the Dover District Council, Jenner (Contractors) Ltd and Kingspan Timber Solutions, who provide specialist services to design, manufacture and install the company’s high performance Kingspan TEK® a structural insulated panel system (SIPs).

Kingspan TEK® was specified for the build because it holds a Green Guide A+ rating for the system’s energy efficient properties including: U-value 0.08 W/sqmK and air changes as low as 0.08/ hr at 50PA. The high thermal performance of SIPs construction, results in a low heating load which makes the use of electric storage and panel radiators viable.

Public Sector Project

Kingspan Timber Solutions were part of the development team of the new £40million Atherleigh Park Hospital mental health facility - designed to accommodate up to 48 inpatients as well as a full outpatient service. On behalf of the 5 Boroughs Partnership, an organisation that provides specialist mental health and learning disability services around Wigan, Kingspan Timber Solutions were appointed by main contractor Kier Group, to provide their Kingspan TEK® and Kingspan TEK® Cladding for the project.  Kingspan TEK® - a Structural Insulated Panel System, was used as part of a hybrid structural frame solution for the first phase of the project.

The construction and materials used in mental health facilities are at the core of how care is ultimately delivered – a critical factor with a direct effect on the physical and psychological wellbeing of the end-users. Timber technology can be highly beneficial in this environment.

The 2016 Structural Timber Awards will be presented at a high profile dinner on 19 October 2016 at The National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham.

The Winners of the Offsite Awards will be announced at a drinks reception on 18 October during UK Construction Week
