New student accommodation is ready for occupation
Work on a £2.2million project to provide new student accommodation in Fort William has now been completed.
The three-storey flats in Camanachd Crescent at An Aird were built for the University of the Highlands and Islands’ (UHI) by specialist developer Cityheart.
The 40-bed scheme, which includes single and studio rooms, will provide residences for West Highland College UHI students in the Lochaber town.
Construction work on the flats started last September, with pre-fabricated timber frames provided by Robertson Timber Engineering allowing the development time to be accelerated despite sustained poor weather earlier this year.
And Cityheart has now handed over the keys to the college so students will be able to move into the new accommodation in September.
Fiona Larg, the university’s chief operating officer and secretary, said: “We are delighted with our new student residences in Fort William.
“Students are at the heart of what we do and the provision of suitable accommodation is an important asset in supporting current students and attracting new ones.”
Contractor Robertson Northern’s regional director Frank Reid explained that using pre-fabricated frames from its specialist timber frame division had made it possible to “reduce construction time without comprising on design, quality or cost”.
He pointed out that this had enabled the company to ensure students had access to first-rate accommodation well ahead of schedule.
