Irish businessman and construction pioneer Gerard McCaughey, the co-founder of Century Homes, has died at the age of 60.

The Co Monaghan native has been described as a "force of nature" in tributes following his death in the US on Wednesday.

Mr McCaughey co-founded timber-frame housing business Century Homes with his father and brother in 1990, and was recognised for his pioneering work in the development of off-site construction methods.

As chief executive of the company, he oversaw a number of breakthroughs in the industry, including the first off-site construction of a six-storey structure, and the UK's first level-six carbon-neutral home.

Century Homes was acquired by building-materials group Kingspan for €98 million in 2005, and Mr McCaughey became chief executive of Kingspan Century.

He moved to the US in 2009 and served as chief executive of construction consulting company Infineco in Los Angeles before co-founding off-site building firm Entekra in 2016.

"[He was] a crusader for all of the improvement, evolution, and potential impact homebuilders should expect of themselves," he said.

"He believed, like his father Brian before him, that homebuilding could be both different and better. Better for people who need and want homes, better for the communities they're in, and better for the businesses that grow up around that need and opportunity and challenge."

Mr McCaughey died "peacefully in the loving care of his family in the USA" on Wednesday, according to a notice on rip.ie He is survived by his wife Sophie and their children Bella, Max, Shane and Zach.
